Gate motor humming but gate not moving: what to check

A hum with no movement means the motor is trying and something is stopping it: a bound gate, a failed capacitor, or a seized drive. Find which one before running it again.

Gate motor humming but gate not moving: what to check

A motor that hums but does not move the gate is drawing power and going nowhere, which is exactly how motors burn out. Stop running it repeatedly and work out whether the gate itself is bound, or whether the motor and drive have failed. The distinction matters: a bound gate is a mechanical repair, while a motor that hums against a gate that moves freely by hand is an electrical or drive repair.

First: is the gate bound?

Use the manual release, exactly as the operator manual describes, and try to move the gate by hand. A sliding gate should roll through its full travel without grinding or catching, and a swing gate should swing without lifting or dragging. If it binds, drags on the ground, or stops at one spot, the cause is mechanical: worn or seized rollers, a bent track, a sagging hinge, a leaning post, or debris in the track. In Concord, post movement from expansive clay and hinge wear on older gates are frequent causes, and hillside gates bind more as slope loads the hinges. See sliding gate repair and swing gate repair for those faults, and do not force the operator against a bound gate.

If the gate moves freely by hand

When the gate moves freely but the motor only hums, suspect the start capacitor, the gearbox, or a stripped gear or coupling. A failing capacitor often shows up as a hum that sometimes becomes movement after a nudge, and it gets worse in heat. A gearbox that is seized or stripped may hum, click, or grind, and the motor shaft may turn while the gate does not. Also check the manual release itself: a release left disengaged after a power outage means the motor runs without driving the gate at all, which looks like a motor fault but is a five-second fix. Check that before anything else. If the motor runs but the gate does not move, and the release is engaged, the drive chain, gear, or coupling needs inspection. Our gate motor repair and gate control board repair pages cover those checks.

What to note before you call

Note whether the hum is steady or intermittent, whether the gate moves a little and then stops, whether there is a grinding or clicking sound, and whether the gate moves freely by hand. Also note the opener brand and model and the gate's weight and length if you know them, because motor sizing depends on gate weight, length, and daily cycle count, and an undersized operator on a heavy or high-cycle gate will keep failing. Stop using the operator if you smell burning or the housing is hot: a stalled motor overheats quickly.

If the checks above do not fix it, or if anything looks bent, cracked, or unsafe, stop and call Grand Gate Repair of Concord Company at +1 925-265-8944. We are open 8:00 AM–8:00 PM daily, Monday through Sunday, at 2727 Clayton Rd, Concord, CA 94519. Tell us what the gate is doing and what opener it has, and we will talk through the next step for gate motor repair in Concord.

Either the gate is bound mechanically, or the motor drive has failed. Release the gate manually: if it moves freely by hand, suspect the capacitor, gearbox, gear, or coupling. If it binds by hand, the fault is mechanical.

The manual release may still be disengaged, so the motor runs without driving the gate. Re-engage the release exactly as the manual describes and test again before assuming a motor fault.

No. Repeatedly running a stalled motor overheats it and can turn a capacitor or gear repair into a full motor replacement. Stop, release the gate by hand, and diagnose the bind or drive fault first.

Yes. Operators are sized by gate weight, length, and daily cycle count. A heavy gate or a high-cycle entrance on an undersized operator wears the motor, gearbox, and capacitor much faster.
